SWAT-T™ Individual Trainer Pack
One blue SWAT-T™ trainer in a resealable pouch, with the instructions printed on the back of the pack. Blue marks it as a training device: it is for practice only — never for a casualty, and never staged in a duty kit. The band carries the same Stretch, Wrap, Tuck printing and the same OVALS = CIRCLES tension check as the live SWAT-T, so every rep teaches you to read the band.
Training deviceBlue — training color1 trainer per pouchResealable pouchInstructions on the pack

The SWAT-T is the tourniquet people most often get wrong without practice — and the one that responds fastest to a few minutes of it.

The short answer
What it is
A blue SWAT-T training band in a resealable pouch with the instructions printed on the back. For practice only.
Use it for
Learning and rehearsing the stretch, wrap and tuck sequence and reading the tension check before you carry a live SWAT-T.
How it's used
On a training limb or a partner: stretch, wrap layer over layer until the printed ovals become circles, tuck the end, then unwrap and pouch it for the next rep.
Who carries it
Instructors, K9 handlers, responders and everyday carriers who carry a live SWAT-T and need the reps to use it.

10 things to know about the SWAT-T trainer

Why an elastic tourniquet needs its own practice, and what the training studies say about how much is enough.

  1. 01

A training device — never a casualty device

The pack holds one blue SWAT-T trainer tourniquet, and blue is the training color.3 It is for practice only: not for live casualty care, human or canine, and never staged in a duty kit, IFAK, go bag or vehicle where it could be grabbed in an emergency.

  2. 02

Same printing as the live band

The trainer carries the live SWAT-T's printed steps — STRETCH, WRAP, TUCK — and its tension check, TOURNIQUET IF: OVALS = CIRCLES.3,4 Reading the band is the skill; the trainer lets you practice it until it is automatic.

  3. 03

    One trainer, one resealable pouch

The instructions are printed on the back of the pack, and the pouch reseals, so the trainer goes back in after every session and the instructions travel with it.3

  4. 04

Why the SWAT-T needs its own practice

Laypeople who had just finished a C-A-T-based bleeding control course applied the C-A-T correctly 92.2% of the time on a manikin and the SWAT-T 11.8% of the time.8 Skill on a windlass tourniquet does not carry over to an elastic one.

  5. 05

Untrained, very few get it right

Untrained laypeople succeeded with the SWAT-T 10.6% of the time,9 and with only the package instructions it had the highest ineffective rate of four tourniquets, 55.5%.10 Children aged 10 to 12 who watched a short training video succeeded 24% of the time.11 A 2025 systematic review found elastic tourniquets behind the comparison devices in every layperson study that tested them.13

  6. 06

A few minutes of training moves the numbers

After a 19-second video watched three times and two practice applications, newly trained appliers stopped arterial flow in 96 of 150 applications on volunteers. Eight who struggled with the stretch got 10 more minutes of instruction, and their occlusions rose from 10 to 20 of 24.6

  7. 07

Practice until you can do it in the dark

Volunteers who trained and practiced first self-applied the SWAT-T in total darkness and stopped arterial flow in all 60 applications.7 That is the standard to train to.

  8. 08

Your own arm is the hard rep

Upper-limb self-applications were rated harder and took longer than leg applications,7 and over cold-weather clothing the SWAT-T was the one tourniquet of five that could not be self-applied one-handed to the arm.12 If self-aid on an arm matters to you, that is the rep to repeat.

  9. 09

Pain is not your success signal

In 41 volunteers, pain at the moment arterial flow stopped was too low to use as a sign of a successful application.14 In training, read the band — ovals become circles — and on a course with a Doppler, confirm loss of the pulse.

  10. 10

    Practice the wrap jobs too

The live SWAT-T is also a wrap over gauze and a securing wrap for a splint.4 Rehearse those with the trainer: wrapped firmly over a dressing, not stretched to tourniquet tension.

How to run a SWAT-T practice rep

Each rep rehearses the live sequence, start to finish, on a training limb or a partner.

  1. 1
Set up. Use a tourniquet training limb, or a partner's arm or thigh. Take the trainer out of its pouch.
  2. 2
Call the placement. Practice both. Hasty: high and tight, as proximal as possible, over clothing — for threat or an unseen source. Deliberate: on bare skin, 2–3 in. above the simulated wound, moved above the joint if that point lands on one. Never across or directly over a joint.1
  3. 3
Stretch and wrap. Pull the band to tension and wrap it layer over layer at the same spot, keeping the stretch on with every turn.4
  4. 4
Read the band. Keep wrapping until the printed ovals have become circles — that is tourniquet tension.4
  5. 5
Tuck. Tuck the free end under the last wrap.4
  6. 6
Release a partner promptly. On a live partner, unwrap as soon as the tension is confirmed; a properly stretched SWAT-T stops arterial flow, and that becomes uncomfortable.6,14
  7. 7
Write the time. Rehearse marking the time of application — the habit has to survive stress.1
  8. 8
Reset. Unwrap, roll the trainer and return it to its resealable pouch.3
Make it harder as you improve. Run reps with gloves on, in low light, and as self-aid on your own leg and arm — the applications the studies found hardest.7,12 Keep your live SWAT-T sealed for the casualty: it is a single-use device.5

Where it fits

Use it for
  • Hands-on bleeding control classes and refresher training
  • Individual reps before you carry a live SWAT-T6,8
  • Practicing self-aid on your own arm and leg7
  • Practicing the pressure-wrap and splint-wrap techniques4
Not for
  • Any real casualty, human or canine
  • Staging in a duty kit, IFAK, go bag or vehicle
  • Replacing a live SWAT-T after one has been used

The evidence

The training studies behind the claims above, what each tested, and how strong the evidence is.

Study Evidence type What was studied What it found
Wall et al., Mil Med 2012 Human volunteers · applier training 15 undergraduates trained with a short video and two practice runs applied the SWAT-T to volunteers at 10 sites Occlusion in 96 of 150 applications; 10 more minutes of training raised occlusion from 10 to 20 of 24
Wall et al., J Spec Oper Med 2012 Human volunteers · self-application 15 trained volunteers self-applied the SWAT-T in light and in darkness Occlusion in 60 of 60 applications in darkness; upper-limb applications harder and slower
Alterie et al., J Spec Oper Med 2018 Human volunteers · Doppler Pain at the moment of occlusion with a pneumatic cuff, C-A-T and SWAT-T in 41 volunteers Pain too low to confirm a successful application in training; SWAT-T the most user-dependent
Yánez Benítez et al., BMC Emerg Med 2023 Human volunteers · cold-weather field 37 expedition members self-applied five tourniquets over cold-weather clothing after basic training SWAT-T the only one not self-applied one-handed to the arm; all five correct on the leg
McCarty et al., JAMA Surg 2019 Manikin · randomized crossover 102 laypeople after a C-A-T-based bleeding control course applied five tourniquet types Correct: C-A-T 92.2%, SWAT-T 11.8%
Ross et al., J Emerg Med 2018 Manikin · randomized, untrained 198 untrained laypeople, one of three tourniquets each Success: C-A-T 16.9%, RMT 23.4%, SWAT-T 10.6% (p = 0.149)
Portela et al., Acad Emerg Med 2020 Simulated limb · randomized, untrained 176 untrained laypeople with only the package instructions SWAT-T had the highest ineffective rate of four tourniquets, 55.5%
El Bashtaly et al., J Trauma Acute Care Surg 2021 Simulation · randomized crossover 96 schoolchildren aged 10–12, after a 7-minute video, applied three tourniquets Success: MAT 67%, C-A-T 44%, SWAT-T 24%
Bordonaro et al., Adv Simul 2025 Systematic review 10 randomized layperson simulation studies, 2013–2023 Training and point-of-care aids raised success; elastic tourniquets trailed in every study that tested them

Strongest to weakest here: volunteer studies with Doppler confirmation, then manikin and simulation studies, then reviews. Together they say one thing about the SWAT-T — it works in practiced hands and fails in unpracticed ones.

How it compares

The trainer against the live device it teaches.

Questions buyers ask

▾Can I use the trainer on a real casualty?

No. It is a training device: not for live casualty care, human or canine, and never staged where it could be mistaken for a live tourniquet. Carry a live SWAT-T, black or orange, for that.

▾Is it the same as the live SWAT-T?

It carries the same printed steps and the same OVALS = CIRCLES tension check as the live band.3,4 It is blue so it can never be confused with a duty band.

▾What's in the pack?

One blue SWAT-T trainer tourniquet in a resealable pouch, with the instructions printed on the back of the pack.3

▾Why not just practice with my live SWAT-T?

The live SWAT-T is a single-use device and is discarded after use on a casualty.4,5 Train on the blue trainer and keep the duty band sealed for the casualty.

▾I'm trained on the C-A-T. Do I still need this?

Yes. Laypeople trained on the C-A-T applied it correctly 92.2% of the time and the SWAT-T 11.8% of the time in the same session.8 The stretch is a separate skill.

▾Can I practice on a partner?

Yes, with care. Wrap to the point where the ovals become circles, confirm, and unwrap promptly — a properly stretched SWAT-T stops arterial flow.6,14 Pain is not a reliable sign of a good application, so read the band.14

▾What should I practice besides the tourniquet?

The wrap jobs the live band also does: a pressure wrap over gauze and a securing wrap for a splint.4 And practice the deliberate placement as well as the hasty one — on bare skin, 2–3 in. above the wound.1

▾Which tourniquet should my duty kit carry?

For an adult limb, TCCC calls for a evidence-based standard limb tourniquet.1,2 The SWAT-T earns its place as a wrap and on small limbs and working dogs — and the trainer is how you make it work when you need it.
