HALO XL Chest Seal
The large-format HALO: a non-vented occlusive seal measuring 8.5 in. × 12 in., close to twice the footprint of the standard HALO Seal, for wounds whose margins run past what a standard seal can cover. Same scrim-reinforced HALO Gel hydrogel and outer tape edge, rated −30 °F to 140 °F, six-year shelf life, latex-free, made in the USA.

Buying the XL is a coverage decision, not an upgrade. A seal that is bigger than the wound is only useful if the adhesive still finds clean skin all the way round it.

What's Included

One large-format seal in a resealable foil pouch. Tap for what is in the package — and read the pack-quantity note.

VIEW ▾What's in the Package — single listing, no variants · latex-free
  • 1× HALO XL Chest Seal — non-vented, fully occlusive, 8.5 in. × 12 in., scrim-reinforced HALO Gel hydrogel adhesive with an outer tape edge, approximately 1.6 oz
  • Foil pouch with four corner tear notches and a re-closable zipper lock at the top, so the pouch can be opened for inspection or staged access and closed again
  • Pack quantity is not stated anywhere in the manufacturer data reproduced. The HALO line is sold both singly and in two-packs; this listing has one variant and no quantity option, so confirm the count before you buy to a kit build sheet.
  • Non-vented means exactly that: There is no vent channel, no valve and no one-way path in this product. If your protocol calls for a vented seal, this is not that item — TacMed's HALO Vent is.
  • No gauze, no burn dressing, no needle decompression device and no instructions-for-use booklet beyond the manufacturer's own package marking are included.

Pack quantity Not published — see the contents note
SKU None published. The previous version of this listing carried "Halo" as a MED-TAC designation rather than a manufacturer part number; that is not a SKU and is not reproduced here.
CoTCCC status No CoTCCC recommendation is claimed for the HALO XL and none is implied by this page.

Dimensions, weight, adhesive construction, temperature range, shelf life, latex status, packaging and origin are as published in the manufacturer data reproduced on the previous version of this listing. Two things a buyer should notice. First, the packaging row on that legacy page offered a choice — "IFAK-compatible folded format or standard 10.75 in. size" — that has no matching variant option on this product; there is one variant here, so treat the format as whatever the manufacturer currently ships and confirm it if the folded cube matters to your build. Second, no manufacturer part number is published for this item; the previous page printed a MED-TAC shorthand in the SKU row, which is not a part number a distributor will recognise. Sterility is likewise unstated. This page carries no application technique, no monitoring interval and no decompression guidance. Choosing between a vented and a non-vented seal, monitoring a casualty after occlusion, and any decision about needle decompression are clinical judgements governed by your training, your protocols and your medical direction — read the manufacturer's instructions for use and follow the current TCCC Guidelines, not a product page.

▾Who Carries It

Combat and tactical medics handling blast and fragmentation patterns, where a wound field is wider than any standard seal footprint · Ground and flight EMS carrying one large seal against the multi-site or irregular thoracic wound · Providers with an open thoracostomy or chest-tube skill set, where a large occlusive dressing has a job after the procedure as well as before it · Kit builders adding a large-format seal alongside — not instead of — the standard-size seals already in the bag.

The XL is a supplement, not a replacement. A standard-size seal is faster to place, easier to seat one-handed and better matched to the ordinary single penetrating wound; the XL earns its space when the wound does not fit that description. Whichever you place, the adhesive still needs a reasonably clean, reasonably dry surface to bond to — that constraint does not scale with size. Chest seal selection, application, ongoing reassessment and any decision to decompress are governed by your scope of practice, your protocols and your medical direction. This page describes the device; your training governs its use.

CLINICAL RATIONALE

Chest Seals in Thoracic Trauma

Chest seals are critical life-saving tools for treating open chest wounds (sucking chest wounds) that disrupt the negative pressure needed for normal breathing.
When air enters the pleural space through a penetrating injury, it prevents the lung from fully expanding and may lead to a tension pneumothorax — a life-threatening condition if not addressed promptly.
Properly applied chest seals restore intrathoracic pressure balance and allow the injured lung to re-expand, buying vital time until definitive care or decompression is available.

1. Vented Chest Seals

Clinical Rationale (Vented):

Vented chest seals feature one-way valves or channels that allow trapped air and fluids to escape from the chest cavity while preventing further air entry.
This controlled venting mechanism reduces the risk of developing a tension pneumothorax and is recommended by the Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care (CoTCCC) for most open thoracic injuries when the vent remains unobstructed.
In tactical and emergency medical settings, vented seals maintain proper intrathoracic pressure dynamics and help stabilize respiration during evacuation.

  • Allows air and blood to escape while blocking additional air entry
  • Recommended by CoTCCC for most penetrating chest wounds
  • Prevents progression to tension pneumothorax
  • Effective during movement and transport phases

2. Non-Vented Chest Seals

Clinical Rationale (Non-Vented):

Non-vented chest seals provide a fully occlusive barrier that prevents any external air from entering the pleural cavity.
These are preferred when environmental factors — such as dust, debris, heavy clothing, or complex wound locations — could obstruct a vent or prevent it from functioning properly.
Non-vented models are especially effective when there are multiple wounds or when both sides of the chest are compromised.

  • Creates an airtight seal to stop further air intrusion
  • Ideal for contaminated or complex wound environments
  • Preferred for posterior or multiple thoracic injuries
  • Simple and reliable under stress conditions

3. Twin Pack / Dual Application

Clinical Rationale (Twin Pack):

Twin chest seal packs are designed for simultaneous coverage of entry and exit wounds or multiple penetrating thoracic injuries.
Applying seals to both anterior and posterior wounds prevents air intrusion from either side and ensures consistent intrathoracic pressure stabilization.
This configuration allows medics and responders to treat through-and-through injuries quickly and efficiently without improvisation.

  • Enables rapid treatment of entry and exit wounds
  • Maintains consistent chest pressure across both sides
  • Optimized for tactical and prehospital trauma management
  • Reduces need for multiple packages or improvised seals

4. Training Chest Seals

Clinical Rationale (Training):

Training chest seals replicate the adhesive strength and venting design of operational models using non-sterile materials.
They are intended for classroom, simulation, and scenario-based instruction, allowing responders to practice correct placement, adhesion, and vent inspection without wasting live medical gear.
Consistent repetition with realistic trainers develops muscle memory and speed during actual trauma incidents.

  • Simulates vented or occlusive seal behavior for realistic training
  • Promotes correct placement and adhesion technique
  • Preserves sterile operational supplies
  • Ideal for EMT, tactical, and civilian responder courses

Clinical Summary

Chest seals play a pivotal role in preventing death from tension pneumothorax, one of the leading causes of preventable trauma mortality.
Both vented and non-vented designs serve distinct operational needs, while twin and training packs ensure preparedness across all care phases — from education to battlefield or civilian emergencies.

  • Vented: Allows controlled egress of trapped air; standard CoTCCC-recommended choice.
  • Non-Vented: Fully occlusive; best for debris-rich or posterior wound sites.
  • Twin Pack: Provides coverage for through-and-through injuries.
  • Training: Non-sterile practice tool for skill retention and readiness.

By re-establishing chest wall integrity and controlling air movement, chest seals restore lung expansion and stabilize respiratory mechanics until advanced medical care is available.
