Before you deploy it
- The R.A.T.S. is a functional tourniquet but it is not on the evidence-based standard-device list. If your protocol requires a evidence-based standard tourniquet, add a C-A-T, SAM XT or TMT and train on it — limb tourniquets go high and tight over clothing when the bleeding source can't be seen or there's no time (hasty), or on bare skin 2–3 in. above the wound once it is exposed (deliberate) — never across a joint.
- The QuikClot EMS bandage is a 4″ × 4″ hemostatic dressing for surface bleeding. For packing a deep or junctional wound, add hemostatic gauze such as QuikClot Combat Gauze or CELOX Rapid.
- The BVM, oral and nasal airway kits, cervical collar and suture set are provider-scope items — use them within your training and medical direction.
- Ammonia inhalant ampules are a traditional first-aid item. For a fainting casualty, positioning and assessment come first.
