Compressed Gauze

Two different compression standards get quoted at this product and they come from different places, so both are printed here and neither is reconciled into the other. The three-minute minimum is a Evidence-based benchmark for hemostatic dressings, where the agent needs a sustained compression interval to work. This is plain gauze; the TCCC skill standard for packing plain gauze is firm, uninterrupted manual pressure until hemorrhage is controlled — an endpoint, not a timer. Three minutes is a reasonable working floor and is not a stopping point.

Wound packing is a trained skill and gauze does not supply it. On an arterial or high-volume bleed, lead with a evidence-based standard hemostatic dressing and use plain gauze behind it as overflow and reinforcement; plain gauze is not a substitute in that situation. Do not pack an open chest wound — penetrating thoracic trauma is managed with a chest seal — and evisceration has its own pathway. A deep junctional wound routinely consumes more than one roll, so stock in multiples rather than singly. Work within your scope of practice and your local protocol.
