Why are 8-ply gauze pads better than 4-ply for wound care?

8-ply gauze pads contain twice as many layers of cotton as 4-ply pads, providing significantly greater absorbent capacity, better padding against trauma, and more robust wound coverage. For moderately to heavily bleeding wounds or irrigated wounds with substantial exudate, 8-ply pads maintain their absorptive function longer before becoming saturated. The additional layers also provide better protection against mechanical trauma to the wound surface during patient movement. Dynarex 4×4 8-ply pads are appropriate for both initial wound management and dressing changes at higher care levels.

How should sterile gauze pads be handled to maintain their sterility?

Dynarex gauze pads are packaged in peel-down sterile pouches that allow aseptic presentation: the foil backing is peeled away and the sterile pad falls or is tipped directly onto the wound or sterile field without being touched on its wound-contact surface. Once a pad has been removed from its pouch and placed on a non-sterile surface, it is no longer considered sterile. Inspect each pouch for seal integrity before use — any torn, punctured, or moisture-damaged pouch should be discarded. Store boxes in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight.

How many pads are in one box, and is that sufficient for an IFAK or patrol kit?

Each box of Dynarex 4×4 Sterile Gauze Pads contains 25 peel-down pouches with 2 pads each, for a total of 50 pads per box weighing approximately 0.5 lb. For a standard IFAK, 2–4 individual pads are typically included. For a full patrol medic kit or vehicle kit, an entire box provides supply for multiple patient contacts. Can Dynarex 4×4 gauze pads be used for wound packing to control hemorrhage?

Gauze pads are not the optimal choice for deep cavity wound packing — that role is best served by long-format gauze rolls (compressed gauze, S-rolled gauze, or wound packing gauze) that can be packed deeply into a wound in a continuous strand. Gauze pads are better suited for surface coverage, absorption, and wound protection. However, in the absence of roll gauze, multiple gauze pads can be packed tightly into a wound with direct digital pressure as a temporary measure.
