The distinguishing feature of the Tracheotomy version is its large anterior opening, which provides clear access to the trachea and carotid pulse points. This opening is designed to accommodate emergency tracheotomy procedures, existing tracheostomy tubes, and continuous monitoring of the carotid pulse without removing or modifying the collar. For intubated patients or those with pre-existing tracheostomies, the large opening ensures secure immobilization is maintained without interfering with tube management.
Rigid plastic reinforcement in both the anterior and posterior components provides firm resistance to rotation and flexion-extension, while non-toxic Plastazote® foam padding on the patient-contact surfaces reduces skin irritation during extended wear. The collar provides rigid immobilization, reduces rotation, and slightly hyperextends the cervical spine — maintaining alignment during transport from the point of injury to definitive care.
