Hypothermia Prevention & Management Kit (HPMK®)
North American Rescue's vacuum-packed hypothermia kit: The patented reinforced Heat Reflective Shell paired with an oxygen-activated self-heating liner rated by the manufacturer for up to 10 hours of dry heat with no power source. Packs to 6.75 × 10.5 × 5.5 in. At 3 lb 8 oz; the shell opens to 78 × 43 in. SKU 80-0027, NSN 6515-01-532-8056.

A mylar blanket answers one heat-loss route. This kit is bought because a shell, a barrier bag and a chemical heat source answer three — and because none of them need a battery you forgot to charge.

What's Included

One vacuum-sealed pouch, three components. Tap to read what is actually in it — and what is not.

VIEW ▾What's in the Package — SKU 80-0027 · vacuum-packed, single-use
  • 1× Heat Reflective Shell (HRS™) — patented 4-ply composite fabric with a protected non-conductive aluminized reflective layer, built-in hood with fluid-absorption pad, top-to-bottom tapered cut, and a continuous 1.5 in. 360° hook-and-loop perimeter closure. Opens to 78 in. × 43 in. Reinforced and weight-tested by the manufacturer to support 250+ lb.
  • 1× Self-heating shell liner — oxygen-activated chemical heat source, no battery and no external power; manufacturer-rated for up to 10 hours of continuous dry heat
  • 1× Plastic vacuum bag — the packaging itself, which doubles as a moisture-vapour barrier layer beneath the patient
  • Vacuum-packaged with NAR Red Tip Technology® pull tabs. Packed size H 6.75 in. × W 10.5 in. × D 5.5 in.; packed weight 3 lb 8 oz.
  • Single-use, all three components. The liner is a one-time chemical reaction and the shell and barrier bag are single-patient items for contamination control — an opened or partially used HPMK is not a stageable kit and should be replaced rather than repacked.
  • No litter, no straps, no thermometer, no IV warmer and no active powered warming device are included. This is the shell, the liner and the bag.

Related variant HPMK-I (Insulated) is a separate NAR product with an insulated shell and a Ready Heat 4 Cell Blanket. It is not this SKU. Confirm which one your protocol or contract specifies before ordering.

Construction, dimensions, weights, the 250+ lb rating, the 10-hour heat duration, the SKU and the NSN are as published by North American Rescue. The 10-hour figure is a manufacturer rating for the liner, not a guaranteed patient outcome. Hypothermia assessment, the decision to apply active warming, and the order in which components are placed on a casualty are matters for your training, your medical direction and the current TCCC Guidelines and NAR instructions for use that ship with the product.

▾Who Carries It

Combat and tactical medics packaging casualties for TACEVAC or CASEVAC, where the vacuum-packed cube is the reason it makes the bag at all · Flight and critical-care transport crews holding normothermia across a long transfer · Search and rescue and wilderness EMS working cold and wet, where a powered warmer is not an option · Ground EMS and fire rescue stocking a trauma bag against the hypothermia leg of the lethal triad · Unit and agency aid-bag builders buying to an NSN line.

Two operational cautions worth carrying. First, do not open it early: The liner is oxygen-activated, so breaking the seal starts the clock whether or not a patient is in front of you. Second, know which product your protocol actually names — the HPMK (80-0027) and the HPMK-I (Insulated) are different NAR items with different shells and different heat elements, and a contract or protocol that specifies one is not satisfied by the other. Everything downstream of that — when to warm, how to assess, when to stop — is clinical judgement under your medical direction and your current guidelines. Read the NAR instructions for use before the kit is needed, not while it is being opened.
