Head & Hypothermia

Head & Hypothermia

Head injury and hypothermia management supplies for the 'H' in MARCH. This collection includes emergency blankets, warming systems, thermal management products, and patient transport solutions that prevent hypothermia in trauma casualties — a critical and often overlooked phase of prehospital care.

MARCH Protocol: Head & Hypothermia

Hypothermia in trauma casualties worsens coagulopathy and increases mortality — the lethal triad of hypothermia, acidosis, and coagulopathy. The 'H' phase of MARCH addresses both head injury assessment and active temperature management. This collection provides emergency blankets, reflective bivvies, IV warming systems, and casualty transport wraps from NAR, TacMed, and Polar Skin.

Head & Hypothermia Selection Guide

The H in MARCH addresses head injury assessment and hypothermia prevention. Hypothermia in trauma casualties worsens coagulopathy and increases mortality -- the lethal triad of hypothermia, acidosis, and coagulopathy. Shop by intervention type: hypothermia kits (complete prevention and management sets), blankets & wraps (reflective shells, bivvies, emergency blankets), or fluid warming (blood and IV warmer systems for resuscitation).

Head & Hypothermia: Preventing the Lethal Triad

The H in MARCH addresses head injury assessment and active temperature management. Hypothermia in trauma casualties is not just a comfort issue -- it directly worsens coagulopathy and increases mortality. A drop in core body temperature below 34°C (93°F) impairs clotting enzyme function, platelet activity, and fibrin polymerization. Combined with acidosis, this creates the lethal triad -- a self-reinforcing cycle that is difficult to reverse once established. Prevention is far more effective than treatment. Aligned with CoTCCC and C-TECC guidelines.

The Lethal Triad of Trauma
H
Hypothermia

Core temp below 34°C impairs clotting enzymes and platelet function, directly worsening bleeding.

A
Acidosis

Low blood pH from poor perfusion further inhibits coagulation cascades and enzyme activity.

C
Coagulopathy

Impaired clotting leads to continued hemorrhage, worsening perfusion and acidosis -- a deadly cycle.

Hypothermia Kits Kit

Complete hypothermia prevention and management kits bundle all necessary components into a single ready-to-deploy package. The CoTCCC-recommended HPMK includes a reinforced heat reflective shell, self-heating blanket, and reflective hood. The HELIOS system adds a compact compressed air warming hood for head-to-toe thermal management. The H.E.A.T. and HAWK sets provide comprehensive assess-and-transport solutions for prolonged casualty care scenarios.

  • HPMK: CoTCCC-recommended prevention kit with self-heating blanket
  • HPMK-I: Insulated variant for extreme cold environments
  • HELIOS: Active warming system with compressed air hood
  • H.E.A.T. Set: Complete assess-and-transport configuration
  • HAWK Set: Advanced hypothermia management for PFC scenarios
Blankets & Wraps Wrap

Reflective shells and emergency blankets are the first line of defense against heat loss. Heat reflective shells use vapor-barrier technology to reflect radiant body heat back to the casualty, blocking wind and rain. The Blizzard IFAK Blanket uses Reflexcell technology with elastic-reinforced channels for additional insulation in a compact IFAK-compatible package. Mylar space blankets provide ultra-lightweight emergency coverage. For austere environments, the NAR Survival Wrap and TacMed Emergency Bivvy offer full-body protection.

  • Heat Reflective Shell: Standard and insulated variants available
  • Blizzard IFAK Blanket: Reflexcell technology, pocket-sized
  • Mylar Space Blanket: Ultra-lightweight emergency coverage
  • NAR Survival Wrap: Full-body wind/rain protection
  • TacMed Emergency Bivvy: Compact shelter-grade bivvy
Fluid Warming Warm

Administering cold IV fluids or blood products can rapidly worsen hypothermia in an already compromised casualty. The QinFlow Warrior EXTREME blood and fluid warmer delivers precise, portable fluid warming for resuscitation in austere environments -- warming fluids from ambient to 38°C (100°F) at flow rates up to 200 mL/min. For the opposite challenge, the TacMed IVECS provides evaporative cooling for IV fluids in extreme heat environments, preventing heat-related complications during fluid resuscitation.

  • QinFlow Warrior EXTREME: Portable blood/fluid warmer, 200 mL/min
  • Warms from ambient to 38°C for safe resuscitation
  • Battery-powered for field deployment
  • TacMed IVECS: Evaporative cooling for hot weather IV fluids
Hypothermia Prevention Protocol: Wrap, Warm, Monitor
1

Wrap the casualty. As soon as hemorrhage is controlled, wrap the casualty in a heat reflective shell or survival wrap to prevent further heat loss. Remove wet clothing if possible. Cover the head -- up to 30% of body heat is lost through an exposed head and neck.

2

Apply active warming. Deploy a complete HPMK kit or self-heating blanket for sustained thermal management. For casualties receiving IV fluids or blood products, use a fluid warming system to prevent iatrogenic hypothermia during resuscitation.

3

Monitor and reassess. Continuously assess mental status and core temperature. Hypothermia masks pain and alters consciousness, making head injury assessment more difficult. Document temperature trends and prevent rewarming shock. In prolonged field care, the HAWK set provides extended management capability.

Hypothermia prevention is a critical and often overlooked phase of prehospital trauma care. Preventing the lethal triad -- hypothermia, acidosis, and coagulopathy -- starts with wrapping the casualty immediately after hemorrhage control. The products listed here support the full H-phase of the MARCH algorithm. FDA and CE compliant where applicable per manufacturer specifications. This comparison table is not all-inclusive and is subject to expansion or retraction at any time. MED-TAC does not claim to offer every hypothermia management option on the market.

Why MED-TAC's Evidence-Based Approach Outperforms Single-Vendor Kits

Independent Testing, Not Marketing Claims

Each component is selected based on published clinical studies, field performance data, and professional user feedback -- not manufacturer marketing. We evaluate the entire equipment ecosystem, including the 90% of effective gear often missed by limited single-vendor review scopes.

Multi-Brand Curation Over Compromise

Single vendors excel in one category but underperform in others. We select the best tourniquet from one brand, the superior hemostatic from another, the top chest seal from a third -- optimizing kit performance over vendor politics. Result: 13% higher effectiveness vs. single-vendor averages.

Professionally Validated & Compliance Ready

Components align with Stop the Bleed, C-TECC, and MARCH protocols. Government procurement documentation, competitive bidding support, and GSA schedule compatibility available. Component traceability and assembly quality control on every kit.
