Find the source. Identify the bleeding point. If the wound is deep, use a finger to locate the artery or vein. Pack directly onto the source -- not just into the cavity.
Pack from depth. Force the gauze directly onto the bleeding vessel, filling the wound cavity from the bottom up. Pack tightly -- the pressure on the vessel is what stops the bleed. Hold firm pressure for a minimum of 3 minutes.
Secure with a dressing. Cover the packed wound with a pressure dressing to maintain compression hands-free. Verify the bleed has stopped before moving to the next casualty.
