Essential Non-Blog FOAM Resources for the ED Practitioner

Bryan D. Hayes, PharmD, DABAT, FAACT, FASHP |

Keyboard FOAM resourceIn my 10+ years working in the ED, I’ve come across a few online FOAM resources (Free Open Access Meducation) that are essential to my practice. Inspired by ALiEM’s new How I Work Smarter series, I wanted to share these free tools in the hope that they may help you work smarter too, regardless of what your role is in the emergency management of patients.

Calculations

  • GlobalRPh: Includes opioid conversions, corticosteroid equivalents, and phenytoin dosing
  • MDCalc: Medical Calculators, Equations, Algorithms, and Scores.

Medication Administration

Patient Counseling

Pharmacology and Medication Therapy

Guidelines, Clinical Policies, and Position Statements

Drug Shortages and Emergency Pharmacist Resources

  • Drug Shortages [from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP)]
  • Emergency Care Resource Center [from ASHP]

Of course this is not a complete list, but they are the sites I use most frequently. I hope you find utility in them in your day-to-day practice. Please share any non-blog FOAM resources that you use.
